Food Safety Management Systems – Requirements for Any Organization in the Food Chain was issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Consumer demand for safe foods has been steadily increasing. As a result, several food safety standards have been developed. Confusion has resulted from the expanding multiplicity of national standards. As a result, there is a need for worldwide harmonization, which ISO hopes to address through ISO 22000. The standard is complementary to ISO9001 in that ISO 22000 focuses on food safety problems and employs a methodology that may be used in conjunction with ISO 9001. ISO 22000 is not a replacement for ISO 9001, but it may be more important to businesses in the food sector than ISO 9001, especially as the food industry faces increasing pressure to demonstrate that it is effectively managing food safety in the wake of highly publicized food scares around the world.
